The following are some precautions all travelers should take. By doing so, you can avoid any inconveniences and problems.

We recommend:

  • Always leave your valuables in the hotel safe. When you must carry them, carry them in a security wallet underneath your clothing (preferably at your waist).
  • Don't walk in dark places or places where there aren't many people.
  • Program your trip keeping in mind the tourist caravans -- Vive Colombia, viaja por ella. (In Colombia, on three day weekends in particular, caravans leave to travel between cities. This is a fun trip, protected by the military, with hundreds of cars stopping in villages and towns on the way to the final destination. It has helped generate more interest in "road trips" in Colombia while giving people peace of mind and security!)
  • Do not accept sweets or food from people you don't know. Some people use a drug called escopolamina to put their victims to sleep and rob them. (This is also known as the "date rape drug" in some countries).
  • Don't carry around fancy cameras, wear expensive jewelry or any other flashy object. These things increment your chances to be robbed.
  • If you plan to travel by land, check with Colombian people about the climate of where you're planning to go. Some roads have guerilla road blocks and bandits and should not be traveled.
  • There are areas in the country like Cartagena, Bogotá, the coffee region, and Boyaca where it's very safe to travel. Other ares like llanos orientales, the south of Bolívar, Buenaventura, El Cauca, Huila, San Agustín and Tierradentro are places you need to check on the status before traveling.
  • When possible, travel by airplane. It's quick, safe, and relatively inexpensive.
