GUAJIRA COLOMBIA

We are an alternative tourism program and community. A network of Wayuu families, all from the Guajira, have come together to create a cooperative. We work together in local communities to develop tourism that shows off the natural and cultural riches of our region while maintaining the integrity of the Guajira, its traditions, its natural resources and more. We have more than ten years experience in eco and cultural tourism and generations of families who have extended their hospitality to tourists over the years.

 

CABO DE LA VELA GUAJIRA COLOMBIA

 

We offer lodging, food, transportation, guide, logistical, and security services in ethnotourism and eco tourism plans for those travelers who want to experience the ethnic and ecological beauty of the Guajira. In the northernmost tip of South America, "The Indigenous and Natural Reserve of the Guajira" is the best, most authentic place to go trekking, bike-riding, scuba diving, spelunking, or camping. For those a little less adventurous and are in need of a rest, we welcome you as well to our peaceful region.

Just as the Guajira is the ideal place for adventure tourism, here you can get, first hand, a taste of our cultural tradition -- one of the richest and most important cultures in South America. Our cooperative works in eco and ethnic tourism as a proposal for alternative economic development while conserving our cultural and ecological beauty and integrity.

CABO DE LA VELA GUAJIRA COLOMBIA

Services

For groups of four or more people, we have travel alternatives from a one-day trip to Cabo de la Vela to eight ore more days visiting the region of the high Guajira. Our services include transportation in trucks or SUVs (appropriate for desert driving) to and from the Almirante Padilla de Riohacha airport and Wayuu guides who will accompany your party during the entire trip to help you communicate with and learn about native communities. We also have bi-lingual guides available (Spanish/English) if requested. We offer lodging in typical-Wayuu style (see photo to the right.)

 

Be prepared to enjoy the traditions of the Wayuu eating -- food cooked on open fires. Tent camping on the beaches is also available. As the Guajira is a region with few luxuries (not counting the phenomenal scenery and culture), we provide our travelers with potable agua and the other necessary basics. We follow the code of "only leave footprints" and instruct travelers on methods and tools to interact with the environment without sanitary facilities. In some regions, water to take showers if available. Depending on our hosts, we may partake in cultural activities that include dancing, music, social events, religious ceremonies, funerals and more.

Our service does not include snacks or additional drinks in stores, crafts, telephone use, or equipment for special activities (tents, bicycles etc.).

 

 

Tourism Activities

Short walks in Wososopo -- on the border of Venezuela -- in the Serranía de la Macuira to the waterfalls, and different beaches including: Puerto lópez, Bahía Hondita, Bahía Honda, Neimao, Puerto Lodo, Portete and Cabo de la Vela. We offer longer walks in the Serranía de Cosinas and passing through the Serranía de Macuira from Siapana a Nazareth; Camping, bicycle tours, water sports, cultural exchanges in Wayuu camps, weaving workshops, typical dances and festivals in the region like the Yonna and playing the tambor (Kasha).

Tours in speed boat to Bahía Hondita, Bahía Honda and Cabo de la Vela. Adventure crossing in truck or campers to visiting places from two to five hours where you can enjoy the exquisite beauty of the region's flora and fauna. During all excursions, you will be able to buy the beautiful typical crafts of the region including bags, backpacks, hammocks (chinchorros), hats, blankets, bracelets, and more.

Visit the Manaure community and its salt mines (open-air), the lighthouse, and the beaches of Pilón de Azúcar. Typical lunch, guide, and transportation.

 

Cabo De La Vela (One Night - Two Days) $ 220.000 pesos/person
Visit the Manaure community and its salt mines, Musichi, Poportin, Ahuyama, Carrizal, the lighthouse, and El Pilón de Azucar. Lunch and dinner the first day. Breakfast and lunch the second day. Lodging in hammock, guide, and transportation.

Bahía Hondita (Two nights - Three days) $ 540.000 pesos/person
Visit the Manaure community and its salt mines, Musichi, Poportin, Ahuyama, Carrizal, the lighthouse and El Pilón de Azucar; Portete, Bahía Honda and Bahía Hondita. Lunch and dinner the first day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner the second day. Breakfast and lunch the third day. Lodging in hammocks in Cabo and Bahía Honda. Guide and transportation.

Punta Gallinas (Two nights - Three days) $ 590.000 pesos/person
Visit the Manaure community and its salt mines, Musichi, Poportin, Ahuyama, Carrizal, the lighthouse and El Pilón de Azucar; Portete, Bahía Honda, Bahía Hondita, and Punta Gallinas. Lunch and dinner the first day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner the second day. Breakfast and lunch the third day. Lodging in hammock in Cabo and Bahía Hondita. Speed boat and jeep transportation to Punta Gallinas. Guide and transportation.

 

Macuira ( Four nights - Five days) $ 880.000 pesos/person
Visit the Manaure community and its salt mines, Musichi, Poportin, Ahuyama, Carrizal, the lighthouse and El Pilón de Azucar; Portete, Bahía Honda, Bahía Hondita, Punta Gallinas, Puerto Estrella, Nazareth, National Natural Park of the Serrania de la Macuira. Lunch and dinner the first day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner the second to fourth day. Breakfast and lunch the last day. Lodging in hammock, guide, and transportation.

Alta Guajira (Seven nights -- Eight days) $1.390.000 pesos/person
Visit the Cerro de la Teta, the border town of Wososopo, La Serranía Cocinas, Bahía de Cocinetas, Castilletes, Bahía de Tukakas, Puerto López, the community of Siapana, Punta Espada, the community of Nazareth and the Natural National Park of Serrania de la Macuira, Puerto Estrella, Bahía Hondita, Punta Gallinas, Bahía Honda, el Puerto and La Bahía de Portete, el Cabo de la Vela; the beaches of Arema, Carrizal, Ahuyama, Poportin, and the community of Manaure and its salt mines. Lunch and dinner the first day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner from day two to day seven. Breakfast and lunch on day eight. Lodging in hammock or chinchorro (a net hammock), guide and transportation.

 

LA GUAJIRA COLOMBIA

 

Physical requirements:

Most travelers with a healthy physique will enjoy a trip to the Guajira. Unfortunately we don't have appropriate facilities and services available por people with disabilities. We don't recommend travel for children under eight years old or adults older than seventy years old because of the terrain, climate, and required physical exertion. Moreover, we don't recommend travel to the Guajira for those with chronic health problems. Nevertheless we do have health services (hospitals) in Uribia and Nazareth and clinics in Puerto López, Puerto Estrella and Cabo de la Vela.

Recommendations and what to bring:

Take complex B1 vitamins daily, eight days before traveling, to avoid bothersome mosquitos. We recommend you bring: a water bottle, pocket knife, toiletries (toothbrush, towel, soap, and toothpaste -- the latter two biodegradable), hiking shoes, water shoes or sandals, two or three changes in clothing for hot weather, shirts and t-shirts, pants, shorts, flashlight with new batteries, sunscreen, inect repellant, sunglasses, a hat or cap for sun protection, ID, personal objects (medications, prescriptions etc.), a thermal blanket, sleeping bag, camera and lots of rolls of film (and extra batteries).
